Fall 2026 GRASP SFI: Patrick Slade, Harvard University, “Towards Personalizing Assistive Technology in the Real World”

/ Levine 307

This is a hybrid event with in-person attendance in Levine 307 and virtual attendance on Zoom. ABSTRACT Assistive technology offers promise to improve personal mobility for hundreds of millions of people. However, determining how to assist people to accommodate their unique needs across everyday mobility scenarios is an open challenge. Personalizing assistance to each user has helped meet these needs and systematically improve mobility outcomes in laboratory settings. To address these challenges, our group performs biomechanical studies to understand people’s movement goals and needs, develops real-world personalization methods, and applies these findings to assist patient populations including people post-stroke, people with knee osteoarthritis, and people with blindness.

FOLDS seminar: Dynamics of large-step gradient descent near flat minima

/ Amy Gutmann Hall, Room 414

Zoom link: https://upenn.zoom.us/j/98220304722 Classically, convergence guarantees for gradient descent (GD) require that the step size be sufficiently small compared to the local curvature (“sharpness”) of the objective. This “small-step” condition is […]

ASSET Seminar: “Trust Substrates for AI-Driven Mathematics”

/ Amy Gutmann Hall, Room 414

The recent autonomous solution to the Navier-Stokes millennium problem was an extraordinary breakthrough. Yet, equally remarkable is how the global community accepted this solution without traditional, years-long peer review. This […]
